Rwandan athletes shine at IRONMAN 70.3 Rwanda 2023 Race in Rubavu
-4 Rwandan athletes qualified for the VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship on 14 & 15 December 2024 in Taupō, New Zealand
– 3rd edition of IRONMAN 70.3 Rwanda to be held on 4 August 2024
RUBAVU, RWANDA, 5 August 2023, Rubavu District hosted the second edition of IRONMAN® 70.3® Rwanda triathlon on Saturday, 5 August. Athletes raced through the scenic Rubavu District, enjoying breathtaking views of Lake Kivu while being cheered on by residents and traveling fans.
58 athletes from Rwanda and 232 athletes from 29 countries, 290 in total, embarked on a 70.3-mile triathlon, beginning with a 1.9-kilometer swim course in Lake Kivu before embarking on a 90-kilometer bike race and finishing with a 21.1-kilometer run.
Rwanda’s Heritier Ishimwe won the men’s race with a time of 4:48:56, while Berber Kramer from Netherlands crossed the finish line first in the women’s race with a time of 4:55:21. Jean de Dieu Bigirimana from Team Bigirimana was the first to cross the finish line in the relay teams’ category with a race time of 4:15:32.
An Awards Gala was hosted for the athletes at the Lake Kivu Serena Hotel. Hon François Habitegeko, Governor Western Province, Clare Akamazi, CEO Rwanda Development Board, His Excellency Ron Adam, Ambassador of the State of Israel to Rwanda as well as representatives of government agencies and sponsors were in attendance.
The recipients of the Awards in the individual category, both male and female, were; 1.Hertier ISHIMWE (RWA #37) in the male age group 18-24
- Hanani UWINEZA (RWA #9) in the female age group 25-29
- Samuel TUYISENGE (RWA #40) in the male age group 25-29
- Faziri RUKARA (RWA #88) in the male age group 30-34
- TEAM TEAM BIGIRMANA (RWA #113), TEAM TIGER (RWA #114) and TEAM TUYENDE (RWA #110) dominated all 3 podiums of the Top 3 relay teams.

The 3rd edition of the IRONMAN 70.3 Rwanda will take place on 4th August 2024 in Rubavu District.
